Impacted teeth are typically treated through a surgical procedure to either remove the tooth or, in some cases, assist its proper eruption into the mouth. Treatment begins with a thorough evaluation, including 3D imaging, to assess the position and condition of the impacted tooth. If removal is necessary, Dr. Wayne will use local anesthesia and may offer sedation to ensure comfort during the procedure. A small incision is made in the gum, and the tooth is carefully extracted, sometimes in sections to minimize bone removal. Recovery typically involves a few days of rest, with pain managed by medication and post-operative care instructions provided to support healing.
What Are Impacted Teeth?
Impacted teeth are teeth that fail to fully emerge through the gums, often because of a lack of space, misalignment, or obstruction by other teeth. This condition is most commonly associated with wisdom teeth but can also affect other teeth like canines. Impacted teeth can cause pain, swelling, infection, damage to nearby teeth, and alignment issues if left untreated. At Wayne Oral Surgery, Dr. Gary Wayne offers diagnosis and treatment of impacted teeth with precision and care. Using advanced imaging and surgical techniques, Dr. Wayne helps relieve discomfort and prevent future complications by safely removing or guiding impacted teeth into their proper position. Impacted Teeth Reviews
I apparently was a late bloomer for wisdom teeth. I was told I had no wisdom teeth (like my mom) but at 28 my dentist informed me I had a wisdom tooth and it was partially impacted. At this point, I panicked. While in college, I worked as a surgical assistant for an Oral Surgeon in Boca Raton. I won’t name names but what I saw in that office completely terrified me when it came to WT extractions. I thanked God every surgery I assisted in that I was born without them. Fast forward 8 years, I asked my dentist for a recommendation and “Dr. Wayne” was her immediate response. I trust my dentist and went ahead and booked my consult. The office is such a relaxing environment and the staff is kind and very helpful! When I explained my fear to Dr. Wayne he immediately told me to wipe the slate clean and not think about what I had witnessed in my past. He explained What I had been witness to was not at all how oral surgery should be done. That response in and of itself sealed the deal! I booked my extraction that following week! I was hoping to do the extraction under general anesthesia because I was terrified but my insurance wouldn’t cover it for one tooth. So I decided to go with Nitrous and local anesthesia. My partial impacted tooth was out before I knew it! I was in and out within 45 minutes of checking in! He was so gentle and his bed side manner was wonderful! I truly can’t thank him enough for understanding my fear, not judging me, and making my extraction a relaxing experience!! (Something I can’t say for the surgeon I worked for) I highly recommend Dr. Gary Wayne! He is truly fabulous and knows what he is doing! Thank you, Dr. Wayne!

Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I avoid having an impacted tooth removed?
Delaying removal of an impacted tooth can lead to pain, infection, shifting of nearby teeth, or cyst formation around the trapped tooth. While mild cases may be monitored for a short period with regular imaging, long-term avoidance typically increases the risk of complications. Our team will evaluate your imaging studies to determine whether it’s safe to wait or better to proceed with timely removal.
Can you get multiple impacted teeth removed at the same time?
Yes, it’s common to have more than one impacted tooth removed in a single visit, especially when several wisdom teeth are involved. Doing so minimizes repeated anesthesia and recovery time. The decision depends on the tooth position, your comfort, and overall health. Our team will discuss whether a combined approach makes sense for you.
Can I drive myself to and from an appointment for impacted tooth treatment?
If only local anesthesia is used, you may be able to drive yourself home. However, for procedures involving sedation or IV anesthesia, you’ll need a responsible adult to drive you. Sedation can leave you groggy or disoriented for several hours. Plan ahead so you can focus on rest and recovery afterward.
