Sedation Dentistry in Boca Raton, FL

Sedation dentistry is a method of using medication to help patients feel calm, relaxed, and comfortable during dental procedures, especially those who experience anxiety, fear, or require more complex treatments. At Wayne Oral Surgery, we offer several forms of sedation — including nitrous oxide and IV sedation — tailored to each patient’s needs and comfort level. Whether you're undergoing a simple extraction or a more advanced surgical procedure, sedation dentistry allows for a more pleasant experience while ensuring you remain safe and stress-free throughout your visit. Dr. Gary Wayne and his team are specially trained to monitor your care and provide a supportive, anxiety-free environment. Contact our Boca Raton, FL office to learn more.

Sedation dentistry is administered through two primary methods: nitrous oxide and IV sedation. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose and begins working within minutes to create a calming, slightly euphoric feeling — while you remain fully awake and able to respond. IV sedation is delivered directly into a vein, typically in your arm or hand, and produces a deeper level of relaxation; many patients feel drowsy or fall into a light sleep during the procedure. Both forms of sedation are carefully monitored throughout your treatment to ensure safety and comfort, helping reduce anxiety, minimize discomfort, and make your dental experience as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Great office! I was in a lot of pain and Dr.Wayne saw me that same day. I was scheduled for IV sedation the very next day and the whole staff was really kind to me. All four of my impacted wisdom teeth were taken out and my recovery was easy. Ask about exparel, I’m convinced it helped 100% since I had such little pain after. Thank you Dr.Wayne for taking great care of me. Highly recommend this office, they are awesome.

I went to Dr. Wayne to have a wisdom tooth pulled. I was very worried but he calmed my worries. He is an excellent surgeon and I received anesthesia for the procedure. He is experienced. I trust him and he did an excellent job. Just note I am a physician. Unfortunately I did suffer a complication of a dry socket. The office was super compassionate with me and I was able to come back as frequently as I needed so that we could make the pain go away and help me to feel better. I strongly recommend Dr. Wayne for any dental surgery needs that anyone may have. Again he is a good doctor, he has an amazing bedside manner and he is an excellent surgeon.

I apparently was a late bloomer for wisdom teeth. I was told I had no wisdom teeth (like my mom) but at 28 my dentist informed me I had a wisdom tooth and it was partially impacted. At this point, I panicked. While in college, I worked as a surgical assistant for an Oral Surgeon in Boca Raton. I won’t name names but what I saw in that office completely terrified me when it came to WT extractions. I thanked God every surgery I assisted in that I was born without them. Fast forward 8 years, I asked my dentist for a recommendation and “Dr. Wayne” was her immediate response. I trust my dentist and went ahead and booked my consult. The office is such a relaxing environment and the staff is kind and very helpful! When I explained my fear to Dr. Wayne he immediately told me to wipe the slate clean and not think about what I had witnessed in my past. He explained What I had been witness to was not at all how oral surgery should be done. That response in and of itself sealed the deal! I booked my extraction that following week! I was hoping to do the extraction under general anesthesia because I was terrified but my insurance wouldn’t cover it for one tooth. So I decided to go with Nitrous and local anesthesia. My partial impacted tooth was out before I knew it! I was in and out within 45 minutes of checking in! He was so gentle and his bed side manner was wonderful! I truly can’t thank him enough for understanding my fear, not judging me, and making my extraction a relaxing experience!! (Something I can’t say for the surgeon I worked for) I highly recommend Dr. Gary Wayne! He is truly fabulous and knows what he is doing! Thank you, Dr. Wayne!

I highly recommend Dr. Gary Wayne if you want your 3rd molar removed! He was recommend to me by a friend and I am extremely happy I made the decision to see Dr. Wayne! He takes his time to explain all the risks and benefits with the procedure and he takes the time to get to know you personally and when you return, he remembers who you are. These are things that you can’t always find at other dental offices. When I asked Dr. Wayne a question, he would explain very thoroughly using his models. His local anesthesia didn’t hurt at all, which I was most nervous about since I am bad with needles. Throughout the procedure, he also kept reassuring me that it was going well and I was a good patient. He also called me a few hours after the procedure to make sure I was doing well! His staff is also super nice and welcoming as well from the moment you enter to the moment you leave, you feel cared for. Everyone go see Dr. Wayne!

Sedation dentistry is a strong option for patients who feel anxious, overwhelmed, or physically uncomfortable during dental care. It is not limited to one type of procedure and can be used to make both routine and more complex treatments easier to tolerate. Candidacy depends on your health history, comfort level, and the type of sedation being considered. In general, you may be a candidate for sedation dentistry if you experience:

  • Dental anxiety
  • Low pain tolerance
  • Strong gag reflex
  • Lengthy procedures
  • Previous difficulty

Patients should be in stable overall health and able to safely receive sedation based on medical history. Our team will review your needs and recommend the safest and most appropriate level of support.

Can I drive myself to and from a procedure that includes sedation?

It depends on the type of sedation being used. If your procedure only involves nitrous oxide, the effects wear off quickly, and most patients are able to safely drive themselves afterward. However, if oral sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia is planned, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home, as these types of sedation can impair coordination, judgment, and reaction time for several hours. Our team will review your sedation plan in advance so you know exactly what arrangements to make.

Is sedation dentistry safe for kids?

When administered by trained professionals and carefully dosed for the child’s age and health, sedation dentistry is considered very safe. Our team evaluates your child’s medical history, anxiety level, and treatment needs to determine the most appropriate approach. We also monitor them closely throughout the entire visit to ensure a calm, predictable experience.

Will I feel nauseous with dental sedation?

Some patients experience mild nausea after sedation, although this is not universal. Eating lightly beforehand and following our pre- and post-care instructions can significantly minimize this feeling. If you are prone to nausea, our team can plan ahead with medication options to help your recovery feel smoother.

If dental anxiety or discomfort has kept you from getting the care you need, sedation dentistry may be the solution you’ve been looking for. At Wayne Oral Surgery, Dr. Gary Wayne offers safe, effective sedation options to help you feel calm and comfortable throughout your procedure.
